Nuremberg: Friday April 4th, 2014

Nuremberg Germany:
Today was a long driving day from Berlin to Nuremburg.  This is the town that some of our relatives live in. During our drive we passed by the Nuremburg Palace of Justice.  We stopped for a short while at the Nazi Party Rally Grounds and got out and took some pictures.

Nuremberg Documentation Center at the Nazi Party Rally Grounds:
The Documentation Centre is located in Congress Hall. It was designed to house 50,000 spectators, however it remains unfinished.  The center is 1,300 square meters and houses the permanent exhibition  "Fascination and Terror" which looks at the causes, the context and the consequences of the National Socialist reign of terror.

We did not visit the inside of this center as we arrived into town a bit late and the center was closed.

Nürnberger Versicherung:
Our tour guide told us that this is where all shows, events and performances are held in Nuremberg.  The  Nürnberger Versicherung can take up to 11 000 spectators and is equipped with modern, quadrilateral screen.  We drove by this arena on our way to the Nazi Party Rally Grounds.

Former Nazi Party Rally Grounds - Zepplin Field & Stadium:
During the reign of Hitler prior to World War II, many parades and rallies were held at this site in Nuremberg.  During our visit it seemed to be a hang out for people who wanted to race their motorbikes.

Nuremberg Nazi Trials Courthouse:
This courthouse was the site of the famous Nazi War Trials at the end of World War II.  I learned that there were 21 defendants at the Nuremberg War Crimes  Trial awaiting sentencing.  Among the defendants were; Hermann Goering, Rudolf Hess, and Joachim von Ribbentrop.

Nuremberg Castle:
The Nuremberg Castle is a historical building on sandstone rock situated north of the historical old town city of Nuremberg.  We were informed that the castle together with the city walls of Nuremberg is meant to be one of Europe's most considerable medieval war systems.

We had the opportunity to walk around and up to the top of this castle.  The castle overlooks the old city of Nuremberg and the view is spectacular.

Old Town Nuremberg:
Nuremburg was seen by the Nazis as a classic example of a city rich in Germanic and imperial history with it's beautiful Medieval architecture.  Nuremburg was once called the  "most German of German cities." The Nazi hierarchy capitalized on this and turned Nuremberg into the city for Nazi Party Rallies, hence the development of the Nazi Party Rally Grounds.

The Schöner Brunnen Fountain - Nuremberg

This beautiful 14th century fountain sits in the middle of the city market square.  The fountain is a main attraction in the town and is approximately 19 meters high and has the shape of a Gothic spire. Our cousin Rita informed us that a lot of people throw coins in this fountain and make wishes.  We were tempted to do this and make a wish, however, we never did.
